Partner Grace & Helen / Parner Rhiannon

A. “Grace and Helen back to back…”

For time:
30 Clean & Jerks (135/95)

then:

3 rounds:
400m Run
21 Bell Swings (55/35)
12 Pullups

Only one partner can work at a time; all work is split. Partners do not have to run together, but no other work can be performed until the last partner enters the building.

I partnered with Nathan.

For the 30 clean and jerks, I believe I did 13 of them and he did 17, so when we transitioned to Helen, I wanted to give him a bit of a break, so I did 15 of the KB swings in the first round and all of the PLU

Then I was bagged for the second round, so he did 15 of  the swings and half the PLU.

For the final round, I did maybe 12 (?) of the swings and 7 PLU.

We finished in 11:37

B. Partner Rhiannon

For shits and giggles afterward, we did 10 minutes of double unders.

We ended up with over 600... I think 640-something.  Nathan did more of the work on this one, I think.

Partner WODS

Saturday at CrossFit Regina featured three separate Partner WODs.

I got Steve as my partner, so we could be Steve 'n' Tyler aka "WOD Looks Like A Lady."

A.  100 Wall balls for time.

Steve and I did these in sets of 10 each.  After one partner threw his 10th WB, the other caught it so there were no pauses in the action.

It took us 3:12.

B. 10-min AMRAP

Alternating rounds with a partner (each partner does all 20 movements and then switches)

5 burpee pull-ups
5 jumping squats
5 clapping push-ups
5 toes-to-bar

Then, some idiot* suggested that to make this more interesting, the partner not doing the work had to be in a handstand hold.

(*It was me.  Obviously.)

That made things interesting alright, if you define "interesting" as "exponentially more fucking terrible the longer this goes."

We did 7 rounds plus 4 burpulls.

C. Partner Rhiannon, switching every time someone stops doing double unders.

This was a good WOD to have Steve as a partner.  He did 84 double unders off the hop... which was probably unwise when you consider that 10 min is a long time and I'm not nearly as good as double unders as he is.

He did the lion's share.  We ended up with 738 and I think I maybe did 200 of them... if that.

Rhiannon 316 says that WOD just whipped my ass

A. "Sasquatch"

For time, using a 75lb barbell, do 21-18-15-12-9-6-3 of:
  • Sumo deadlift high pulls
  • Push press
I did the first sets of 21 unbroken, then when I broke up the SDHPs, I would transition straight from the last one into the push pulls.

6:57  (PR)

B. "Rhiannon"

10 minutes of double unders.

I did 50 in the first minute and then it was all downhill from there.

316.

Not my best. And that's the bottom line.

Front Squats (3s), Tabata, "Rhiannon"

A. Front squats 3-3-3

I did 185-205-225 (PR)

B. Tabata (Box jumps and push-ups)

112 box jumps and 85 push-ups for a score of 197. Not my best.

C. Rhiannon. Ten minutes of max double unders.

258. I always think I am gonna do better on this than I do. Ah, well, doing it right after Tabata is as good a reason as any for a sub-par showing.

A. Shoulder Press 3-3-3

Ended up with 135

B. Deadlift 1×5

C. “Rhiannon”
Max Double-Unders in 10 minutes

300.  Not my best.

"That's the most blood I've ever seen from double unders."

Today was sort of an interesting day at Crossfit, for a number of reasons.

Firstly, I was the only person who showed up for the 2pm class. In my four years at CrossFit Regina, that might be the first time that ever happened. I've done workouts with just one other person, but doing it all by myself is a different vibe.

The workout was the "Newport Crippler"  then a ten minute rest, and concluding with a half-Rhiannon.

Newport Crippler (30 x bodyweight squats, then a one-mile run)

My previous time doing this WOD had a time of 10:03, but reading my description of that day makes me believe that I overachieved a bit. I was shooting for a sub-11-minute time today.

I used a 185lb barbell. I did my squats in sets of 15-10-5, just like last time, but I think I was really lacking some urgency. I didn't finish them until 2:49.   I bet I did them in less than two minutes last time.

The run was s-l-o-w. Making matters slightly more interesting was the fact that as I was trudging along, a cop car drove past me no fewer than four times.

When I stumbled into the gym at 11:14 elapsed, they drove past in the alley and told Aaron that they thought I might have been someone they were looking to arrest, until they realized I was from CrossFit.

Actually, if I was a criminal, CrossFit would probably come in handy.  Running from the po-po, carrying TVs, pulling yourself up to second-storey unlocked windows, jumping over fences, that sort of thing.

CrimeFit, anyone?

There's a new CrossFit affiliate in Regina called CrossFit Villains, so maybe they're trying to capitalize on that underserved market of scofflaws looking to increase their functional fitness. Or maybe what makes them "villains" is their criminally bad website design.  (C'mon, fellas, that badass industrial-looking background makes it a chore to read the actual, y'know, words on your website.)

Half-Rhiannon (five minutes of double unders)

In my third set, of double unders, I whipped myself pretty good on the arm, right smack dab on a scab on my left elbow that I acquired via rug burn during an impromptu submission grappling match between Harlan and me during the last UFC pay per view. (BTW, I tapped the Big German out, no matter what Harlan says or was captured on video by spectators that night.)

The ensuing bloody mess prompted the quote from Robin that you see in this blogpost title.   My double unders kinda fell apart after that, though I wouldn't blame the boo-boo as much as I would blame being really, really goddamn tired.

Re-kindling my love of Back Squats, plus a fling with Rhiannon

Back Squats and I have had our ups and downs. Back when I was doing Strength, there was a time when all I wanted to do was Squat. It was easy to forsake all other forms of CrossFit. I couldn't get enough.

But then -- and I blame myself for this -- things took a bit of a downturn. The relationship became more like work. Instead of being excited to do Back Squats, I started dreading them.

I let myself go. I didn't just gain strength weight, I gained fatass weight. I was drinking too much (milk), and I stopped appreciating everything Back Squats had done and was still doing for me. Then I got hurt and decided to end the relationship.

Sure, I'd still Back Squat occasionally. I didn't avoid them, but I exactly didn't make an effort to get to the gym when I knew there would be Back Squats there.

However, in the last couple of months, I've been re-establishing my relationship with Back Squats. We're not exclusive -- I'm still doing other WODs -- but I think that's what makes it work. Things are better between us than they've ever been.

A. 20 minutes to a max Back Squat triple 3-3-3-3-3

185-225-255-275-290(PR)

B. Rhiannon – 10 minutes of max double-unders.

317. Not a PR, or even second best, but I'll take it.

"Sasquatch" and "Rhiannon"

A. "Sasquatch":
21-18-15-12-9-6-3 of 75lb sumo deadlift high pulls and push press.
Took me 8:34 or something, more than 30 seconds slower than my only other recorded time.

B. "Rhiannon"
10 minutes of double unders.

I did 340, which is a PR.

Hang Power Snatch and Rhiannon

A. Hang Power Snatch 3-2-1-1-1 I didn't follow the pattern exactly, because I am sore from Saturday and Robin advised against it.

95(3) 115(2) 135(1)

Robin, watching my awkward-as-hell hang power snatch: "We're going to have to fix your feet before you go any heavier."

B. Rhiannon - Number of double unders in 10 minutes.

319 (PR) That's a strong improvement over my previous best of 274, but I feel I should have broken 300 long ago.

PCFC#2 and Rhiannon

A. Prairie CF Challenge workout #2 “3×3″:
3 minutes of Rowing (score = distance in meters / 10)
3 minutes of KB Clean & Jerk – 55lb
3 minutes of Wall Ball – 20lb to 10 foot line,

I rowed a bit over 800m, did 25 (I think) KB C & Js and 51 wall balls. I did more wall balls than I did in the competition, but I also didn't have a Nazi disallowing a bunch of my throws because I didn't get low enough on the squat (which was utter bullshit, by the way.)

Total score was 159.1 Meh.

B. “Rhiannon”
Max Double-Unders in 10 minutes

If I've done Rhiannon before, I didn't have a record of it.

My result was 274. When we started, I was still winded from the first WOD, and had problems stringing DUs together, so I'd like to think I'm capable of more.

I know I've done 200 DUs for time and I think I did that in 6 minutes or something.
