Invictus Chipper

We were supposed to do back squat max triples today.  Not wanting to re-tweak my back, I thought I'd just do some light reps with 135lbs.  Even that felt shitty, so I didn't do them.   Harlan told me to hit the foam roller.

For Time: Row 1000M, 20 Shoulder to Overhead, 30 Squat Cleans, 40 Burpee jump over barbell  (135lb)

I used the Advanced Men's weight even though the only thing that's advanced about me is my ability to keep deluding myself.     Shoulder to Overheads were from the rack and I think I did them in sets of 8, 6 and 6.   The squat cleans took forever.... I believe it was eight full minutes.  Scientists are seriously considering re-classifying me as a glacier.    Finished in 19:39.  Ugh.

Sandbag Shitstorm / MUs #2 and #3

The programming at CrossFit Regina called for a strength segment and metcon, as per usual.

I was looking forward to doing back squats for the first time in a while, but got hung up at home so completely missed that part.

I did get there in time for the metcon, though. 

 

A. "Sandbag Shitstorm"*

*not the official name... but it's an awesome name and if you think otherwise, I will fight you. 

10min AMRAP:


30 Sand bag walking lunges 45/20
30 sand bag shouldering (15 each) +5 squats with bag on left shoulder, 5 squat with bag on right shoulder
100 sand bag carry

I got 2 rounds, plus 30 lunges plus 15, uh, shoulderings and 4 squats.

I guess that's okay.  But I think I was without inspiration due to a lack of appropriate WOD music.

Given the sandbaggy nature of this WOD, they should have played "Darube" by Sandstorm on a constant loop. (Please enjoy this timeless techno classic, accompanied by visuals of legendary MMA fighter Wanderlei Silva mauling people by punching, kneeing, and stomping.  Oh so much stomping)



Really, this song should be the soundtrack for all of our lives.  It would make us all a minimum142% better. 

 

B. Muscle-Up practice

So I figured that I'd do the backsquats with the 7pm crowd, after doing the metcon at 6:30.  When I mentioned this to Aaron, he replied, "Your backsquats will be severely compromised by the metcon."
While I am the #VoiceOfReason for my Neanderthal buddies on our upcoming UFC roadtrip to Winnipeg (a group which includes Aaron), I have to admit that he was right.   It's reassuring to know I have someone who can step in as a #SubstituteVoiceOfReason should I get stabbed by a Winnipeg ne'er-do-well or throttled by Harlan. 

Instead of doing backsquats, I thought I'd work on muscle-ups, since I hadn't been able to get a second one since the day I finally knocked the MU monkey off my back

I got some tips from Ann-Marie and Leya.  After a few frustrating attempts and walking away, I did a few jumping MU's and then came back to the rings with no one around. 

Nailed it.  I was so happy, I just stayed up there and waited until Leya noticed from across the gym, since it seems like the only time I can do these fucking things is when she's present. 

I then made a less than graceful dismount that ended up with me falling down on my ass. 

A few minutes later, I decided I wanted to try for a second one.  I got it, though it was a bit more of a struggle to push myself up.  No one-legged eggbeater move though. 

So, in the course one evening, I managed to increase my lifetime total for MUs by 200%.

I made it to my first 6am WOD in a long, long time.

It was a great way to start a day off, and I'm not even being sarcastic.  It was nice to see the Janimal and Boy Dana, and be coached by my big German CrossFit life partner Harlan. 

I went pretty hard on this one, but not balls-out, keeping in mind the fact that I have to do 13.2 tomorrow. 

The last recorded instance of me doing this workout doesn't even have a time attached, just the words "This ruined me."   That may be because I forgot to put the time or did it in chunks, not for time. 

The T2B and the pull-ups were the big time-sucks on this.  I didn't rip my sissy hands, though. 

I finished it in 15:26, which is nearly identical to a time when I did it two years ago. 

And it didn't ruin me.

"That's the most blood I've ever seen from double unders."

Today was sort of an interesting day at Crossfit, for a number of reasons.

Firstly, I was the only person who showed up for the 2pm class. In my four years at CrossFit Regina, that might be the first time that ever happened. I've done workouts with just one other person, but doing it all by myself is a different vibe. 

The workout was the "Newport Crippler"  then a ten minute rest, and concluding with a half-Rhiannon.

My previous time doing this WOD had a time of 10:03, but reading my description of that day makes me believe that I overachieved a bit. I was shooting for a sub-11-minute time today.

I used a 185lb barbell. I did my squats in sets of 15-10-5, just like last time, but I think I was really lacking some urgency. I didn't finish them until 2:49.   I bet I did them in less than two minutes last time. 

The run was s-l-o-w. Making matters slightly more interesting was the fact that as I was trudging along, a cop car drove past me no fewer than four times.

When I stumbled into the gym at 11:14 elapsed, they drove past in the alley and told Aaron that they thought I might have been someone they were looking to arrest, until they realized I was from CrossFit.

Actually, if I was a criminal, CrossFit would probably come in handy.  Running from the po-po, carrying TVs, pulling yourself up to second-storey unlocked windows, jumping over fences, that sort of thing.

CrimeFit, anyone?

There's a new CrossFit affiliate in Regina called CrossFit Villains, so maybe they're trying to capitalize on that underserved market of scofflaws looking to increase their functional fitness. Or maybe what makes them "villains" is their criminally bad website design.  (C'mon, fellas, that badass industrial-looking background makes it a chore to read the actual, y'know, words on your website.)

In my third set, of double unders, I whipped myself pretty good on the arm, right smack dab on a scab on my left elbow that I acquired via rug burn during an impromptu submission grappling match between Harlan and me during the last UFC pay per view. (BTW, I tapped the Big German out, no matter what Harlan says or was captured on video by spectators that night.)

The ensuing bloody mess prompted the quote from Robin that you see in this blogpost title.   My double unders kinda fell apart after that, though I wouldn't blame the boo-boo as much as I would blame being really, really goddamn tired.

Regional Workout #2 – Row/Pistols/Hang Cleans

Row 2 km
50 Pistols (I did these assisted)
30 Hang Cleans (I used intermediate weight of 135 lbs. rx'd is 225.)

This was surprisingly nasty. I was pretty spent by the end of it. Before the workout, I had entertained notions of maybe using 175 or 185 for the cleans. Good thing I didn't, because I'd still be there, trying to finish this fucking workout.

Took me less than 8:00 for the row, but holy crap do I hate rowing that much.

Pistols... ugh.

The cleans I did in sets of 6-4-5-5-3-2-5, I think. Harder than I thought. I wanted to avoid putting the bar down unless I had to. Later on, I really had to.

Hang Squat Snatch / Ridiculously long 6 a.m. Metcon

95-105-115-125-130(F)-130. These are sort of fun, but then I'm not using a bunch of weight. I prefer singles to catching the thing on the way down. What can I say? I've got SISSY HANDS.


B. Metcon. Should've been called: "You know we have to go to work this morning, right?"

Something's going on with my left foot. It may have to do with the fact that I jumped out of a tree yesterday (don't ask) from a height that was probably unwise.

Anyway, it became apparent in the first half of the 800m that it would be unwise to continue running on it.

So I did a 400m run/500m row at the start and a 1000m row at the end.

Can I just say that 100 ring dips is a lot of fucking ring dips? Because it is.

A lot.

Of fucking ring dips.

My total time was 30:04, I think. I never actually looked at the board, but Harlan had yelled it out.

Open Workout 12.2 - SNATCHTASTIC!

Open Workout 12.2
Proceed through the sequence below completing as many reps as possible in 10 minutes of:

30 Snatch (M 75 / F 45 lbs)
30 Snatch (M 135 / F 75 lbs)
30 Snatch (M 165 / F 100 lbs)
Max Rep Snatch (M 210 / F 120 lbs)

This workout begins from the standing position. The athlete will complete all reps at the first weight before advancing to the next weight. Score is total reps completed in 10min. Athletes use one bar, must change plates as the clock is ticking.

Since I'm a non-committal wuss and didn't sign up for the Open, I didn't do 12.1, but CrossFit Regina made 12.2 today's WOD, so I got a chance to do it this morning.

I'm not particularly strong when it comes to power snatch and 135lb is on the heavy side. I've done "Isabel" (30x135lb power snatches for time), but it took me 8:16 (and that's before doing 30 snatches at 75. So, I figured I'd probably have a tough time getting past the second round. Plus, I've never snatched more than 160, so even if I did reach the third round, I likely wouldn't get one rep.

There were only three people at the morning WOD this morning. Kent and the Janimal did the first heat, with Coach Harlan and me counting reps. Then I went solo.

The first 30 with 75lbs took me less than two minutes, but then I was winded while trying to take off the 15lb plates and put on 45s. That was hard. Actually, catching my breath during this whole WOD was harder than you'd think, considering I was only doing maybe 4-6 snatches per minute during the second round.

The 135lb snatches were tough from the get-go. I tried to concentrate on keeping my chest up and dropping under the bar as best I could, but I still had to press out the weight on most reps.

I was also trying to keep my form decent as a way of self-preservation. As GorillaMan's quote indicates, this WOD would be a good way to fuck up your back if you're not careful. In that respect, it's a benefit that I: a) am not in the competition and b) did this at 6am. I didn't go crazy and sacrifice form in trying to achieve a particular score or beat someone.

On the bright side, I'm pretty sure my pace was a bit better than the last time I did "Isabel". I also had far fewer failed attempts (only two this morning, if I'm remembering right).

Total reps: 57 (30x75lb, 27x135lb)

European Regional WOD (Partnered) / 1km Run

Pull-ups (managed to do 20 straight)
Box Jumps – 24″
Situps (I did toes-to-bar because that's how the 9AMers did it.
6×10m overhead carry together – 135/95lb (The height difference between Harlan and I was good for a few laughs on this one)
Situps (no toes to bar this time)
Box Jumps
Pull-ups (No 20 straight this time; probably 10-5-5)

Then the group did a 1km run. Took me 4:17.

Back Squats

I woke up at 5:42 this morning and made a spur of the moment decision to go to CrossFit. I was very glad I did. Not only was my big German CrossFit life-partner Harlan coaching, the WOD was back squats (5x5)

I haven't done heavy back squats since hurting my back warming up for strength work a while ago. I also failed to do much in the way of high-rep, low-weight squats to rehab, because I am a moron.

So today, I decided it was time to get back on the squatty horse, but to do so with caution.

So my sets of five looked like this:

135-205-225-245-255.

My max is 270, but 255 was plenty heavy and I thought I would quit while I was ahead.

"My Pet Rock"

Partner up and each person perform
3 rounds for time:
15 X Bear Complex -95lb/65lb
30 pull-ups
60 push-ups
400m run

The “pet rocks” are a pair of 45# plates for men, 25# plates for women. One partner holds the pets while the other does the exercise. You may switch when necessary, but they must not touch the ground. Pets hate to be left alone or worse yet dropped. If the “pets” are dropped or set down on the ground each partner must add 5 reps to the exercise they are doing.

Brief Rest

Partner Rutman Mile:
Pass the sandbag back and forth without touching the ground.

I originally did this WOD with Harlan like a year and a half ago and we only got through two rounds. It was awful, mostly due to the sheer volume of work and the requirement to hold those plates off the ground.

I've been wanting to erase the DNF off of my conscience for a long time, but the two or three times this WOD has come back up, I have not been able to go to CrossFit, much to Harlan's chagrin (although he did get paired with BrianB at least one of those times, so he actually traded up on the deal).

This time, I was able to make it, though Harlan couldn't come. Instead, I was in a trio with "The Yeast from the East" Kat and Leya. I basically did whatever Kat did at the same time as her, alternating work with Leya.

Due to a smarter way of holding the "pet rocks" off the ground (basically, squatting with the plates resting on our legs), this wasn't so bad this time. I mean, it was still absolutely awful, but it was something that we could deal with.

We were done the first part at 70:57

We rested a few minutes and headed out on the Rutman Mile. Because I didn't have a dude to partner with, I carried a 45lb sandbag the whole mile, rather than splitting the work on a 90lb sandbag. Kat and Leya split the work on their own. When we got back, the clock read 87:56

"CrossFit Football"

This WOD has teams of two splitting the work in two 10-minute halves. You can choose whether you want to go for touchdowns or field goals.

TD:
80 squats
40 pull-ups
20 burpees

Mandatory point after:
25 double unders

FG:
20 thrusters (45lb dumbell)
30 sit-ups
20 box jumps.

Harlan and I got a touchdown and two field goals in each of the halves for a total of 26.

By the end, I was very close to puking, though that might be related to the healthy amount of beer consumed last night.

Strength - Workout A

3 sets of 5 x 190lb back squat
Yup. These are starting to feel heavy.

3 sets of 5 x 90lb shoulder press.
I'm just reading the chapter on these in "Starting Strength." I think it helped.

1 set of 5 x 235lb deadlift.
These felt pretty good, thanks to some good, hands-on coaching from Harlan.

3 sets of 5 x 20lb weighted pull-ups.
Pretty tough in these. I tried to get them done as quickly as possible.

Strength - Workout B

3 sets of 5 x 185lb back squats. Note to self: Pay more attention to the amount of weight on the bar. I did a set of 5 x 175lbs before I noticed it was too light. Also, I notice that once I hit rep 3 or 4, I forget what number I'm on. There was likely at least one set, and possibly more, in which I did six reps.

Hey... they don't call it "CountFit."

3 sets of 5 x 100lb bench press.

5 sets of 3 x 115 power cleans.

I know it's still early days, but I'm really happy that I decided to start doing this. I don't harbour any illusions of having a 1000-plus CrossFit Total like Harlan, but I always knew there was a lot of room for improvement when it came to my strength. The number of metcon workouts that I'm doing is way down, but I don't really miss them that much. In fact, with the low-intensity strength workouts I barely even break a sweat... at least, so far. I'm sure when the weights start to get close to the limits of my capability, I will start to sweat. But even with the light weights, I think I'm actually losing the last of the Christmas/Cancun surplus weight and inching back into the 173-175 range I was at before.

Aaron had told me to make sure I eat when doing this. He wasn't kidding. I have been eating CONSTANTLY, and I am always hungry. I've been trying eat mostly good stuff, and I guess when you're eating good food (meat, veggies, fruit) it takes a lot to fill up. My stomach is literally growling as I write this, and it was less than an hour ago that I was eating a good portion of turkey and chicken breasts and some raw veggies, followed by a slice of banana bread.

I e-mailed Aaron the other night about the strength programming: "I am really digging it so far. I wish I had done this a long time ago."

He responded: "Glad you are enjoying it...Right now everything is fairly easy, but it will get tougher, much tougher. :-)"

Much to learn, young Tyler has. Much work left to do, there is

Sorry for the Yoda-esque title. I've been playing a lot of swordfighting on our new Wii Sports Resort game, and I'm feeling sort of Jedi.

I went to CFR tonight to take part in strength club. The competition team training, of which most of the strength club members are a part, has introduced some new stuff to the curriculum. Tonight was a lot of snatch work, followed by a mini metcon. ("Heavy Jackie": 1000m row, 30 push press with 125lb, 15 pull-ups; my time was 8:17, three seconds behind Harlan.)

I won't go into all the details, but tonight was a good reminder that I need to consistently practice Olympic lifting technique.

But my biggest CrossFit priority this year is getting stronger. How much stronger? I don't think it's out of the question for me to have a CrossFit total that's over 800. I'm at 705 now, and I think with some hard work, I should be able to put at least 50lbs on my deadlift, 30 on my back squat and 20 on my shoulder press.

I thought about going nuts with the milk, but I have a hard enough time staying lean as it is. I would like to go the Chris T. or BrianB route and have a low amount of body fat, but still be able to move a sufficient amount of heavy weight, have a pretty good metcon capacity and look decent with my shirt off (I realize that's vain; I'm so vain that I do think that Pat BenetarCarly Simon song is about me).

If I want to get better, I gotta get stronger. While it was fun to do the same workout as the competition team, I think I will stick with the regular strength club programming from this point forward.

Deadlifts x 5, then more Deadlifts and Box Jumps

First part: Deadlifts 5-5-5-5-5

Deadlifting guru Harlan says your five-rep max is supposed to be 72 per cent of your one-rep max. For me and my piddly little 315 max DL, that would be around 225.

Today, I also experimented with an alternate grip on the bar, and I think it helped.

185-205-225-245-255.

Then it was a metcon, for time:

10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 reps of

Deadlifts (using 60 per cent of your five-rep max)
Box jumps

I did this with 155lbs and the 24-inch box, because we don't have enough 20-inchers.

I was neck-and-neck with the Janimal the whole time. That girl is relentless and just keeps coming like the Terminator.

I'm sure I sacrificed some form in the later rounds, which is why I'm not a huge fan of DL for time. I realize that you should worry about form first and time second, but that's hard for me to do in the heat of the workout.

"Another Chipper"

For time:

1500m row
50 power cleans (65lbs)
25 ring dips
50 wall ball
25 GHD sit-ups

The rowing and wall balls were the toughest part of this one. I was sort of dreading the dips, but they went okay. I would have liked to string together more cleans in a row, but I was also trying to keep my form good.

Time was 17:02. The last time I did this was back in January, and it took me 20:05 with assisted ring dips.

As I mentioned, I couldn't string together too many wall balls in a row. Harlan was training today and at one point he said, "C'mon, you said yourself [on your blog] you're taking too many breaks."

Well, that'a a good point, actually. Still, there's nothing like someone throwing your own words back in your face at 6:30 in the morning.

If any other trainers or CrossFitters are looking to motivate me mid-workout by reiterating something I've said on either blog, here are some approved suggestions (by putting them here, they have technically been on the blog):

Tyler does Push Press, is reminded how weak he is

At the Saskatchewan CrossFit Challenge, we did "Anyway Overhead" and I got 185lbs overhead once using a push press with barely any warming up and felt I could have gone a bit heavier. So I had visions of improving on that here.

Nope.

3x135, 3x155, 3x165, 1x185(f), 1x185(f), 1x175(f).

Damn.

By this point I was downright pissed. Harlan encouraged me to end on a positive note, so I did 1x165lb and then failed at 170. (I think. It was early.)

Bonus was to run 800m for time. I got it done in 2:57, which felt okay.

Fuck.

I like to think that I could do a bit more than that, but my right hip wasn't in the mood. I'm amazed that there are gals at Crossfit Regina who can deadlift 400lbs. Hell, Brad Flood did more than that tonight, and he probably weighs 15 lbs less than me. So jealous.

9:42 as rx'd. When I went in tonight, I was hoping to get less than 12 minutes, but sub-10 seemed like a pipe dream. I took almost four minutes off my time from when we did it in April. I'm very happy with that. Thanks to Harlan and Franz for yelling at me.

How much ya bench?

In my case, not much.

The WOD was 5-5-5-5-5 of bench presses, followed by five rope climbs and 50 leg pistols.

I had never done bench presses as part of a workout, but I knew that I can't lift a lot that way. Plus, my left arm has been a bit sore since Saturday's day of hell.

So, my lifts went like this: 95, 115, 125, 135, 140 (1). Oh yeah, I was partnered with Harlan, who was lifting 100lbs more than me.

Afterward, it was time to tackle the rope climb. I was a little apprehensive, because I'd only done it once before. That time, it really hurt my sissy hands and I think it contributed to a temporary arm problem.

The first one went fine. The second climb went even better, and I barely had to use my feet. I got to the top, rang the bell and it was time to go down.

There are two ways to go down the rope: You can drop (we have a crashpad, though it's not huge) or you can climb (which takes more work). The problem is, I'm both chickenshit and lazy. So my instincts l tried to slide down it like a fireman's pole. Well, obviously that is not something you do on a rough, coarse rope. Naturally, I skinned a good-sized chunk out of the meaty part of my palm, below my thumb.

Fuck.

Actually, it could have been way worse, so I got pretty lucky.

But I didn't get to the other three rope climbs, and it was getting late so no leg pistols, either.

Day 100 and "Deep Rescue"

I was pretty happy when I walked into CrossFit Regina on Saturday, because I was finally going to get the evil Wall Ball Challenge monkey out of my closet.

It was day 100 of the Wall Ball Challenge. I don't know how many people started, but only nine people were still in it at the end. Back when we did the 100-day burpee challenge, the people who finished all got t-shirts. Robin asked me for suggestions as to what they should do for the WB Challenge finishers, and I suggested a banner with the names of the people who finished that will hang in the rafters at CrossFit Regina.

So, I thought the Saturday WOD would be us doing the 100 wall ball for time, and then something else afterward. And that would have been the case, if I had come at 11. I showed up at 10, and the workout for that time was positively scary.

Aaron was the trainer on duty and I can see how, as a firefighter, this workout would have appealed to him. It was called "Full Mission Profile - Deep Rescue" and was adapted from Brass Ring Fitness.

The workout involves a scenario that simulates us rescuing a group of youths caught in landslide and trapped in a mineshaft. The scenario included simulating getting to rescue site, bringing equipment, accessing mineshaft, and transporting patients.
Phase I - 1000m Farmer's Carry with 45lb plate (25lb women)
Phase II - 5 rounds of 15' Rope climb and 10 (L&R=1) Renegade Rows 35lb (25lb women)
Phase III - Deadlift a sum of 5000lb (3000lb women) ie. 50@100lb
Phase IV - 5 Rope Climbs (75 Pull-ups), then 1000m Farmer's Carry with 45lb plate (25lb women)

Had I looked on the website, I would have known that the Wall Ball Challenge finale wasn't until 11. But I didn't. Now, I could have decided that I wanted to save my energy for the wall balls, and come back at 11. But I don't think that would have been very CrossFitty of me. Kim Fe, the only other Wall Ball Challenger who showed up at 10 decided to go for it and I were partnered up. We agreed not kill ourselves trying to finish quickly.

I thought the best way to do this would be to walk with the plate on my head, using my folded up shirt to pad. It was good for walking, but if you wanted to jog (which I guess we did) it didn't work that good. A 45lb plate is pretty awkward to carry while jogging, and my arms aren't particularly long. I was happy when this was done.

Phase II - 5 rounds of 15' Rope climb and 10 (L&R=1) Renegade Rows 35lb
I have done precisely one rope climb and it tore my hands and hurt my arm, so I thought I would do pull-ups. 75 pull-ups is a lot. Renegade rows involve you holding yourself in a push-up position, but with a 35lb weight in each hand. Instead up pushing up, you pull one weight to your shoulder, then the other. When you've done both arms, that counts as one rep.

Phase III - Deadlift a sum of 5000lb (3000lb)
This was probably the quickest phase. I did 38 reps of 135lbs. I think I did it in four sets.

Phase IV - 5 Rope Climbs (75 Pull-ups), then 1000m Farmer's Carry with 45lb plate
The pull-ups just sucked. I started off doing in bunches of eight or six, which quickly became sets of two and then ones. Around the 35 mark, I was able to re-discover my testicles and start doing fives again. Still, this took a hell of a long time. Fortunately, my sissy hands didn't tear, so maybe they're toughening up.

Nah.

The final Farmer's Carry, we walked, and I kept the weight on my head the whole time. I noted to Kim that in my pre-CrossFit days, if I had been in the area and I saw a pasty white guy walking around with a dumbbell plate on his head, I would not have thought it was an area in which I should leave my car unattended.

Our final time was 54:33. Aaron said, according to the scenario, about a minute later, the rescuers and the people they were trying to save would have been buried alive.

100 Wall Ball for Time

I served as a counter for my big German CrossFit lifepartner, Harlan. The guy did 50 before he needed a break, which is insane, and completed the whole thing in 4:03.

I was actually feeling pretty good, when it was my turn to do the wall balls. I can't really remember how many I did consecutively off the bat, but it was less than 30. I did have to take a few quick breaks, and I think Harlan was pretty generous when it came to judging which ones hit the 10-foot line. I only had to re-do one.

My last set, I think I did 17 in a row, which I thought was going to kill me, but once I got over 90, I didn't want to waste any more time catching my breath.

Final time was 4:43, which is a big improvement from the 6:20-something that I scored when we started this thing. Of the six people who showed up on Day 100, it was good for third place, behind Harlan and Nolan, who got an amazing 3:28 (something I wouldn't have believed possible).
